Monday 29th November - Shore Fishing Update

HOPES NOSE
By Jonathan Grimes

Fished Hopes Nose on Sunday 28th and what a change from previous visits. Previously I have seen a number of Codling (had one myself to 2.5LBs) good flatfish, Conger and Smooth Hound.

On Sunday I had the usual whiting and dogfish but nothing of any note, but also saw very little else caught. There were a few Garfish caught but the only good catch was a Plaice of about 1.5LBs. This fell just as it was getting dark and was the only decent fish.

TIDE TIMES
This weekend's tide times have been added. Today's tides are high 7.30pm and low 1.15pm

Sunday 28th November - Shore Fishing Update

PRINCESS PIER
By Simon Day

I float fished there Saturday afternoon for a short time. Between 2pm and 4pm I caught 2 mackerel but they were the only two bites I had. I did see others catching Garfish as well but the 4 or 5 I saw there fishing the bottom blanked. This spot is definitely fishing better during darkness.

TRAWLER FOR DOCUMENTARY FOUND

It looks like my post about the film crew in Canada wanting to film a local trawler has now been answered. Thanks for all the help!

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER
By Darren Herridge

Parking at the breakwater in brixham is now 95p for all day, just for your info. I assume it's for the winter and will go back to extortionate prices come Easter.
Fished at the Freshwater car park in Brixham the other morning at dawn. Caught a couple of mackerel and a couple of decent wrasse.

TRAWLER WANTED FOR DOCUMENTARY
By Simon Day

I receive the following email the other day. If you can help please let me know:

"Hello Simon - great site. I am part of a documentary film crew from canada. We are coming to film a documentary in Torquay. It is a case that has been heavily profiled - the Albert Walker case. Our approach is from a forensic science viewpoint. As you may remember a Brixham fisherman caught the body. I am looking for someone to take us out fishing - on a boat that has nets etc. to we might film some documentary footage of what it would have been like."

FISHING ROUND UP FOR THIS WEEKEND

Each Friday I'm going to post a round up of fishing spots that should produce some good fishing over the weekend. If you have success or failure please let me know! There could be some copy/pasting from previous weeks if they are still producing the fish.

BABBACOMBE PIER
Not as many dogfish as there has been recently but still plenty of Whiting. Its been reported that there is a conger lurking around there as well if you fancied more of a challenge. During the day mackerel are still being caught. Mostly small but every now and then you get one around the 1lb mark.

HOPES NOSE
If you can face the hike Hopes Nose is still producing a lot of good and varying fish at the moment. Dabs, Conger, Cod, Codling, Whiting and some flatties are all being caught in numbers. Best time is during the hours of darkness and first thing in the morning. If you can distance cast (150+ yards) then fish on the highest and flattest point of the nose (just to the right of the tip of the nose if you're looking at it).

PRINCESS PIER
Lots and lots of Whiting at night and some mackerel and garfish during the day. Best times at the moment seem to be an hour after dark and the first two hours after high tide. As reported on Wednesday there are also a lot of whiting only an ounce or two in weight which strip your bait quickly.

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER
Stick the last third and if possible fish the very end. I'm still hearing that some good fish are still coming from the very end at the moment.

Wednesday 24th November - Shore Fishing Update

PRINCESS PIER
By Simon Day

I took a friend with me and we fished the pier from 3.30pm to 8pm. During daylight there were quite a few mackerel and garfish to be had on floats. People fishing the bottom were not even getting bites.

Between 5pm and 7pm the bites picked up a lot with whiting taking the baits almost before the weights hit the bottom. Float fishing during this time there were constant whiting bites but these whiting were the size of your thumb. It was impossible to catch anything bigger as the baits were being stripped so quickly.

After 7pm is slackened right off with only the odd tiny whiting bites remaining.

The bottom fishing produced best when the cast was over 80 yards. Float fishing fished best close in to the pier. I was using a 1 up paternoster rig with a pennel setup. Bait was mackerel and rag worm.

TIDE TIMES
Today's tides are 4.30pm High and 10.30pm Low.

BABBACOMBE PIER
By Mark Stockman

Just a mini report to let you know the pier and the beach still fishing well, had eight doggies friday night along with some whiting of edible size for a change! Only two of us fishing one from the pier, and myself from the beach. Pier produced biggest catch, whilst the beach provided lots of "sport" with many bites. First fish out of the water within five minutes of tackling up. All told an excellent night's fishing from my favorite spot.

TIDE TIMES
This weekends tide times have been added. Today's tides are 3pm High and 9pm Low.

This spot continues to be a good one with plenty of fish being caught during the hours of darkness.

Hi! this is my 1st report in. I fished monday night/tuesday morning 2-5am, at brixham breakwater. I caught just a couple of Whiting using mackerel strips tied to some haddock innards.

ODDICOMBE BEACH
By Simon Day

Fished there last night between 5pm and 10pm with two rods on the bottom. Lots of bites but again I had bigger hooks on to try and stop the little ones getting hooked. Ended up with two nice sized dogfish and a Whiting just over 1lb.

ODDICOMBE BEACH
By Simon Day

Babbacombe pier was packed yesterday but I thought it would be :) Went to Oddicombe and I had the whole beach to myself. Plenty of bites and fish. Best ones were a 2lb 1oz dogfish and a 1lb 6oz Whiting. Most of the fish landed were only 40 yards out but the whiting came from 150 yards out. I was using four rods and the two furthest and closest were doing the best.

HOPES NOSE
By Jonathan Grimes

Got a chance to go fishing on Sunday 14th, so I headed for the Hopes Nose. Fished just to the right of the high ground and had a codling of about 2.5 LBs. Saw a few other Codling caught as well and heard of a good size Dab.

TIDE TIMES
This weekends tide times have been added. Today's tides are 8.15pm High and 1.30pm Low.

Just returned from fishing the pier at low tide.... WHAT A NIGHT! Several small pollack, 3 decent size whiting and several doggies, heaviest was 2 and a half pounds.

HOPES NOSE

The Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust are holding a clean up Hopes Nose session between 10am and 1pm on Tuesday the 23rd November. You can phone 01803 60635 for more details. This is also mentioned on the Events page.

OOPS, WRONG FISH
I've corrected a fish on most of the places to fish guides because it was incorrect. It should have said Smoothhound and not Tope. Thanks Paul for letting me know!

Friday 12th November - Shore Fishing Update
By Simon Day

BABBACOMBE PIER
As you can tell I enjoy fishing the same spot over a period of a few days to see what's happening :)

Fished there last night between 4pm and 10pm. It was again a very busy night with lots of bites and catches. Fish I caught last night were 1x Pollock, 1x Rockling, 3x Dogfish and 15x Whiting.

Biggest doggie was 2lb 1oz, whiting 1lb 3oz and the rockling was ½lb . The other folks on the pier last night were also catching a lot of whiting and the odd Pollock. Those who were float fishing were catching the odd one but not as many as us fishing the bottom.

Baits that were working well last night were rag worm, squid and mackerel strips. Size 2/0 and 3/0 hooks were being used by most of us.

Best thing about last night were the people there. There were already 2 people fishing the end of the pier and not only did they let me squeeze in they also let me use two rods. If you read this and that was you yesterday a big thank you from me!

FISHING ROUND UP FOR THIS WEEKEND

Each Friday from now on I'm going to try and post a round up of fishing spots that should produce some good fishing. If you have success please let me know!

HOPES NOSE
If you can face the hike Hopes Nose is still producing a lot of good and varying fish at the moment. Dabs, Conger, Cod, Codling, Whiting and some flatties are all being caught in numbers. A high double figure Cod was caught from a boat close to Hopes Nose recently so they are out there. Best time is during the hours of darkness and first thing in the morning. If you can distance cast (150+ yards) then fish on the highest and flattest point of the nose (just to the right of the tip of the nose if you're looking at it).

BABBACOMBE PIER
As you can see from my reports this spot is doing really well at the moment. Fishing its best during darkness.

PRINCESS PIER
At night this spot is producing a number of fish and some quite large.

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER
I've been hearing mixed reports for the breakwater over the last few days. Stick the last third and if possible fish the very end. I'm hearing that some good fish are coming from the very end at the moment.

Thursday 11th November - Shore Fishing Update
By Simon Day

BABBACOMBE PIER
Fished the pier from 4pm to 12am Tuesday. Lots of whiting (a dozen) but also a first for me tonight: two fish on one hook (2x whiting). I was using a 4/0 to stop all the teenie weenie little blighters hooking on.

Also had one doggie which got hooked through its middle fin so it gave me a good fight bringing it in.

I also had two enormous bites but both times they broke free half way through reeling it in. No idea what they were but I was struggling to bring them both in so I'm a little gutted about that.

BABBACOMBE PIER
By Mark Stockman

There were only three of us angling that night (Sunday), myself and two gents from Plymouth. There were plenty of small pollack and even the occasional whiting before high tide. About half an hour prior to the high tide, the first doggie of the night made an appearance.

ODDICOMBE BEACH
Fished There 11.30pm Saturday to 4am Sunday morning though the high tide. Apart from the odd dogfish it was very quiet that night.

HOPES NOSE
I'm still getting good reports about the fish being caught at Hopes Nose but they all tend to be dawn, dusk and night time for the best results. I've still not heard of anyone catching dabs but there are plenty of dog fish and whiting plus the odd conger. I've not heard of anyone else catching a tope the last few days.

TIDE TIMES
This coming weekend's tide times have been updated. Today's tide times are 2.50pm high and 8.45pm low.

Saturday 6th November - Shore Fishing Update
By Simon Day

Sorry for the lack of updates the last few days. My main hard drive died on me Wednesday and although I have a certain amount backed up I cannot back everything up due to shear size (my graphics folder alone is over 50gb). I'm slowly getting things back to normal but it might be another few days before I'm completely back to normal.

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER
By Mark Stockman

Fished Brixham (ICI Car Park) Wednesday. Apart from several small pollack and a couple of whiting, not much even though the conditions were perfect. Did have a number of large bites but as per usual "they all got away....." (Same story....) One surprise was a very nice Dogfish which was caught on mackerel strip fishing about 10 metres off the slipway.... Sadly it wasn't me that caught it!

Tuesday 2nd November - Shore Fishing Update

HOPES NOSE
By Jonathan Grimes.

Fished Hopes Nose Sunday 31.10.04. The conditions were choppy so I wasn't expecting Dabs and as expected didn't catch any. I did have the usual dogfish and Whiting, of which some were of a good size. I can CONFIRM some other good fish came out today. The mate I was fishing with had the same whiting and doggies but also had a Smoothound of about 4/5 LBs and a conger of at least 9/10LB. We fished from about 9.30 till 3 o'clock. I also heard of 2 codling being caught and on hearing this wanted to see for myslef.Sure enough I tracked down the angler who had the codling and the best was about 3LB. All in all, apart from the usual doggies and whiting Hopes Nose gave up Smoothound, Conger and Codling today...and that's what I saw, there could have been others.

TODAY'S MEET
Location is Oddicombe beach from 5pm onwards. Anyone is welcome even if it's only to pop down and say hello. I'll be the one wearing the Penn Flotation suit.

TIDE TIMES
The weekends Tide times have been updated. Today's tide times are 8.50pm high and 2.20pm low.

EQUIP. REVIEWS - NEW ENTRY
I've added a new multiplier reel review today; the Daiwa Sealine SL30SH.

BEGINNERS GUIDE
I've added to page two of the beginners guide to cover sand eel and a way I've found of really securing it to the hook. The fish love it and it lasts for ages. I hope you find it useful.

MINI MEET TUESDAY 2nd NOVEMBER
It looks like we're planning a mini meet for Tuesday so if you fancy coming along come back to this page tomorrow for the location in Torbay we'll be fishing from.

The times will be from around 5pm to 10pm and anyone is welcome.

DAWLISH WARREN
Ok it isn't Torbay but I thought I might as well post about it. I fished the main beach last night with two other people and quiet was an understatement. Between us and 6 rods we only caught two whiting. We were there from 4pm to 9pm.

We were not using the usual baits associated with the beach (or so we were told) but instead were using rag worm, calamari, other squid and sand eels.

PHOTOS OF SPECIES
There are still a number of species missing from the list so if you have a photo of a missing fish please could you email it. The email address is located on the contact details section to the right of this post.

Some of the species we'd like include:

  • Plaice
  • Weever Fish
  • Gurnard
  • Pouting
  • Cod
