New Years Eve - Shore Fishing Update
BRIXHAM BREAKWATER
By Nigel Street
Date 30th december
Just came back from Berry Head,Just to the right of the platform.
I fished from 8.00am to midday and had 1 mackerel on the retrieve....However i did hook into something quite nice but the bloody thing got off, just my luck. I was using small whole squid, fresh mackerel and large sandeel's.
I will go again later as night falls with some worm to try again. Just like to say its great to have a local site like this. about time too.

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER

Afternoon/evening at end of the breakwater still some mackerel being caught on float with sandeel and mackerel baits, not so much luck on feathers. Not so many whiting but a nice little male dragonet before dark (ragworm-mackerel bait).

Christmas Eve - Shore Fishing Update
BRIXHAM BREAKWATER
By Mike (CHUBB) Ballard
monday 20th : 4pm-10:30pm
went to end of the breakwater and set up a running ledger with a large bait of ragworm and slice of mackerel to fish on the end steps on the inside of the breakwater (towards astra zeneca).
immediate results with medium sized whiting in abundance.
bites dropped off at low tide, with only a dogfish as the tide turned, after that more whiting in plentiful supply, with a couple of half decent sized ones
Tuesday 21st : 2pm-8:30pm
once again off the farthest end steps on the inside of the breakwater, and again using a running ledger with size 1/0 hook with a largish ragworm and slice of mackerel bait.
caught a couple of nice wrasse (1lb-2lb approx.).
After dark things got stupid with big rattling bites as soon as the lead hit the bottom, this was followed by a steady flow of decentish whiting being landed. had a bite that bent the rod in two and threatened to snap it but i found the hook to be bitten off with about 5 inches of 15lb trace line!
later amidst the whiting i had a welcome change with a nice pollock that was easily 2lb.
more whiting followed, a guy came along and tipped me off about nice cod being caught off berry head among tons of whiting.
*Admin note* Thanks very much Mike for both those reports!

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER
By Darren Herridge
Fished Brixham Breakwater from 4pm to 7.30pm on Mon 20/12. Caught a couple of whiting and a nice sized pouting, using ragworm tipped with squid on the bottom. Tried pennel hooked half squid for something bigger but blanked. Wind was a problem. Biggest result was that I tired out my SAS floatation suit, and can only reinforce what Simon says, after a rod and reel this should be a priority purchase.

Wednesday 15th December - General Update
By Simon Day
Sorry for the lack of posts. I had a car crash on Sunday coming back from the Slapton meet. I wasn't injured thanks to the airbag but I am still a bit shaken. The car was a write off so I'm taking a couple more days off while I get myself together and I'll post one more roundup this Friday and that will probably be all until Jan 2nd.
The results of the Slapton Sands meet were a few dozen Whiting, a few Pollock and a codling. The bites didn't really start to happen until dark.

Wed 15th. Fished Brixham breakwater last night. Caught a few pout and whiting (one of which was hooked on the top hook of my pennell rig which had a whole cuttlefish mounted on it - greedy fellow!). Later on during the ebb caught a 6lb strap conger also on whole cuttle.
Tues 16th: Brixham breakwater. Catches were a few Pout and dogfish. Had a hard and fast run on the bait runner of the type that comes from a bass! shame the hook didn't sink on striking but that's the way it sometimes goes, bait was whole squid. A calm night with a large amount of mullet on the inside of the wall.
Thanks very much for the report Jim!

FISHING ROUND UP FOR THIS WEEKEND
Each Friday I'm going to post a round up of fishing spots that should produce some good fishing over the weekend. If you have success or failure please let me know! There could be some copy/pasting from previous weeks if they are still producing the same type of fishing.
BABBACOMBE PIER
There are still a small number of mackerel and garfish being caught during the day and plenty of activity with whiting and pouting at night. Not large fish but pretty consistent fishing.
HOPES NOSE
Cod up to 17lb have been caught here very recently with plenty double figure cod about. Also some codling, dabs, pouting and whiting as well as the odd conger down here at the moment. Best time is during the hours of darkness and first thing in the morning.
PRINCESS PIER
Lots and lots of Whiting at night. Best times at the moment seem to be an hour after dark and the first two hours after high tide. During the day there are still mackerel and garfish to be caught on floats but little comes from the bottom until after dark.
BRIXHAM BREAKWATER
Lots of Mackerel and Garfish being caught during the day with plenty of smaller whiting and pouting at night. The odd codling and conger are also being caught.
ODDICOMBE BEACH
This is still fishing quite strange at the moment. Prolonged quiet periods followed by intense bursts of activity. Oddicombe is throwing up the odd very nice fish including rays and 2lb+ whiting. It's worth having two or more rods out. Cast one as far as you can and the other 20 to 40 yards out.

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER

I fished there tonight with a friend and we caught plenty of varied fish. Most common was the obvious whiting with the best size being 1 1/2lb. We also caught a few Pollock with best just over 1lb and we also had some pouting with the best being only 9oz.
Total catches were around the three dozen mark and all were caught on float. We hit the bottom for an hour but apart from one very strong bite we blanked on the bottom.

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER

I fished there last night between 6pm and 10pm. The first bonus was to confirm the car park charges have dropped to 95p to park all day.
I was consistently catching codling last night using a long 1 up paternoster with a pennel end. My bait consisted of a lug/rag/squid combo and the codling all went for the squid (Calmar). The most active fish spots were close in. Anything in the 10 to 30 yard mark were getting lots of bites.
I lost my trace to a snag around 9pm so got out my light gear and did some float fishing. Using lug tipped with squid I pulled in 2 whiting quite quickly after each other. The best being 1lb 4oz.

ODDICOMBE BEACH
By Simon Day
Fished there yesterday afternoon and evening and it was a bit of a weird one. There were prolonged gaps of nothing and then short bursts of madness. The best fishing times were half an hour before high tide and then an hour after high tide. I only managed one whiting, my mate blanked and someone else from Plymouth who came down had 3 whiting and a pouting.
The baits they liked the most last night were a rag and squid combo or plain mackerel. I couldn't get any rag yesterday and the fish were ravenous for the stuff. Thankfully the other chap gave us his rag when he left and as soon as I used a rag/squid combo the bites were constant.
The chap from Plymouth also said he saw a very nice thornback ray being caught from the beach two weeks ago.
TIDE TIMES
This weekend's tide times have been added. Today's tides are high 8.30pm and low 2pm
