Sunday 26th September - Shore Fishing Update

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER (By lewis micklewright)
3lb Brill caught off brixham breakwater today (low water) on lug worm.

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER (By Simon Day)
Spent the whole day fishing on the breakwater also. Not many fish about but a large conger managed to snag me 4 times on the trot while I listened to my bait clicker go into overdrive. Person I with (Andy) caught a number of small wrasse and the nasty weever fish. (Treating a weever fish sting page)

The breakwater was the busiest I've ever seen it so I guess a competition was on today.

While I was taking photos of location one I saw a number of very large fish striking food on the surface. I estimate the sizes to be 5lb+

TIDE TIMES
This weekends tide times have now been added. Today's tides are 5.30pm for high tide and 11.30pm for low tide.

REVIEWS UPDATED
Even more reviews have now been added.

BABBACOMBE PIER

Sunday early evening saw the sea around Babbacombe pier filled with hundreds of mackerel on the surface in a feeding frenzy as the sprats got herded into Babbacombe's small bay. I have witnessed mackerel shoals before but never on this scale. Within a few minutes I had enough mackerel to fill my freezer for the winter ahead. It was impossible to catch anything else and even my bottom rigs were pulling in mackerel as they fought for space in the shallow waters.

If you can wake up early enough lots of good bass being caught with spinners/plugs at dawn.

GENERAL NEWS
The sprats have arrived in the Bay now so everywhere should be producing a lot of mackerel.

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER
Went there yesterday evening for two hours between 7pm and 9pm. In the two hours I had 9 mackerel (best being 1lb 8oz) and 3 Pollock (Best being just over 2lb). The person who was leaving the spot I went to said he had been there all afternoon and he caught lots of mackerel and garfish.

On the bottom there has has been plenty of ballen wrasse and the best I've heard of being caught is over 3lb.

PRINCESS PIER
The last few days have been pretty busy here also. Lots of mackerel and garfish about. Vladimir Giochev, who was on holiday here this weekend, reported also catching two dozen black bream on rag while float fishing.

How to setup a float rig expanded
I've been asked by some people what kind a float they should use. On the bottom of the float rig page I've now added a brief guide the most common floats found on the market.

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER
What a difference a day makes. Sunday we had a heat wave with temperatures up to 26c. It wasn't as busy as Saturday but there were still plenty of fish to be had. Garfish dominated the bites unless you fished below them. There were still mackerel about but there wasn't as many as yesterday and those caught tended to be small. For lots of mackerel the only place to be was the very end yesterday.

Night fishing was slow last night although I did luck out on a 20lb+ conger which jumped off my hook as I was about to haul it up out the sea :(

PRINCESS PIER
Mullet as big as 8lb have been seen inside the marina.

HOPES NOSE
Reports from tourists in the area have said that Hopes Nose has been fairly quiet the last few days.

TIDE TIMES
This coming weekends tide times have been added. Tides today are High tide 10.30pm and low tide 4pm

SEA NEWS IN BRIEF

By Simon Day (simonday.com)

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER
No matter if you fished inside the breakwater or outside there were a lot of mackerel being caught all day yesterday and peaking just before dusk. As seems to be the way this year people using feathers were catching nothing while the people float fishing either side of them were piling the mackerel in. I ended up with 3 dozen mackerel and half a dozen garfish fishing there yesterday afternoon. I also broke 2 personal bests yesterday with a 2lb 1oz mackerel and a 1lb 7oz garfish. There were no bites all afternoon on the bottom.

PRINCESS PIER
Float fishing is producing mackerel and garfish from the pier while mullet fishing from the half moon is producing some nice catches also.

BABBACOMBE PIER
Nights have been a mix of a lot or nothing. Bottom fishing here was quiet last week but seems to be picking up.

TIDE TIMES
Corrected an error for the low tides today.

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER
There was a lot of mackerel and pollock off the end of the breakwater yesterday evening between 6pm and 9pm but only if you were float fishing. The people spinning and feathering either side of me caught nothing. After dark a few strong bites on the bottom but nothing forthcoming.

Tide times today are 8pm for high tide and 1.30pm for low tide.
