TEIGNMOUTH
By Alison Proud

I went fishing for the first time today 26/07/2005, with my husband sean. we went to teignmouth opposite broadmeadow where the boat yard is and i caught 3lb bass and 1 half pound black bream on peeler crab. I am well chuffed that i managed to catch it myself, i will be defiantly going again.... i loved it.

PRINCESS PIER

This places seems to have spits and spurts of activity. A few mackerel and pollock around. Late evening and very early mornings seem to be producing the best results from what I've been told.

MEADFOOT BEACH

Very quiet during the day but picking up a little in the evenings and early mornings. Spinning seems to working better than float fishing or bottom fishing at the moment.

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER

Although still quiet it seems to be fishing slightly better than elsewhere in the Bay at the moment. Few mackerel, quite a few pollock but still no reports of any conger. Watch out for mullet as they seem to be feeding now.

Anyone got any reports for Hopes Nose? I've not heard from there for a couple of weeks now?

MEADFOOT BEACH
By Barry Gilbert

Thursday 21/5/05
Fished Meadfoot Beach from 5.00 pm to 10.30 pm .
Float fished using mackerel strip, then tied frozen sandeel , but caught nothing !!
Used spinners from about 7.00 pm. to 10.30 pm. and caught one Pollock and one good sized mackerel . Were are those illusive Bass ??

BABBACOMBE PIER
By Rich Carus

Just got back from a day and night fish at Babbacombe pier. Sad to say there have been very few Mackerel around on the float lately and not that many being caught by people on feathers either. Still plenty of doggies though off the bottom using mackerel and squid. Had nine overnight. Was told by a mate down there that a conger was caught off the bottom on Saturday during the day!
On the point about the blokes down there drinking and throwing people in. They were NOT local and have since returned to Barry Island from where they crawled so it is still a very safe place to fish.
[Admin note: Thanks for letting us know about those guys!]

BABBACOMBE PIER
By Denis Brook

Went fishing at Babbacombe Pier last Saturday(16/07/05) Between 7pm and 11pm. I caught 6 mackerel on feathers and the people who were float fishing were pulling them out as quick as the float was hitting the water. Found the most successful way on feathers was to let them sink to the bottom before reeling them back in. Conditions were great and it was a superb night.

MEADFOOT BEACH
By Simon Day [Admin]

Sunday 17/07/2005
From 4pm to 7.00pm
Bait: None (spinning)

What a difference a week makes. I was spinning all along the beach and didn't catch a thing. Tried various lures but none had any luck. I met someone who knew the site while I was down there (Hi Barry!) and he said that he went fishing on Thunderhole and he didn't catch anything and neither did anyone else fishing there.

On his way back he saw someone else fishing with live eels and he caught 2 small bass.

Congrats also to Barry for catching a small conger on the beach the week before!

There is still a shortage of mackerel and most other fish here and elsewhere. They are about but they are in very small numbers. A number of boats have been reporting that the sea even further out is very clear so until we get a good blow it looks like the fish will remain further out where they can remain more hidden.

For all your Bass hunters out there Teignmouth is still the pace to be. I've had a few reports coming in from Teignmouth and although the bridge is a no fishing location there are a lot of fisherman there at the moment catching a lot of fish. I recommend fishing in that general area at this time.

MEADFOOT BEACH & HOPES NOSE
By Vladimir Giochev

I fished in Torquay last Saturday 02.07.05. Started at the Princes pier. 8.30 am until 12.00.
Had 7 mackerel on feathers and float. Moved to Hope nose 2pm until 7.30 pm.
Had a lot of mackerels on feathers & lures. After 5 pm mackerel were coming on Northern Herring 15g lure green and silver and Pollock on orange. I had 6 Pollock of a pound each before I lost the lure. The seal was there begging for fish all the time :-))) The weather was gorgeous!

BABBCOMBE PIER
By Dave

Although it has quiet spells there are mackerel and pollock being caught both on lures and floats. A word of warning. There have been two guys down there drinking beer and smoking pot who like chucking people in the sea (I was one). Lots of cuts and grazes because of low tide. If you see them BE CAREFUL!

Still plenty of pollock about using lures. I was using a small silver eel type lure (it's unbranded) which only dropped down a few feet. Not quite enough to miss all the weed but enough to help me use the same lure all evening.

There isn't much coming off thunderhole so I was just walking along the beach spinning as I went. This seems to the best method. People on floats didn't seem to be catching anything from what I saw.

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER
By various people

Most are saying it still has a lot of quiet spells but mackerel, pollock and wrasse are being caught. Lures again seem to the be the main catches of fish but float fishing is a close second. I've not heard any reports of congers being caught yet.

PRINCESS PIER
By Simon Day [Admin]

Although not quite Princess pier there are a number of reports of mullet in and around the harbour. The problem is they still don't seem to be feeding very well but that should change very soon.

HOW TO CATCH A MACKEREL GUIDE - UPDATED.

My thanks to the folks sending in emails asking me to clarify more some points in the guide. I've now updated the page to include all the questions asked.

MEADFOOT BEACH
By Simon Day [Admin]

Sunday 10/07/2005
From 4pm to 7.00pm
Bait: None (spinning)

Started off on Thunderhole and had nothing for the first couple of hours. I don't think the group of kids tome stoning were helping much. I managed one pollock before moving to the beach. I started spinning for a couple of hours along the beach moving position all the time. There was a lot of weed so I used lures which didn't sink too deep. I had the occasional tangle but managed to keep the same lure during the evening and I caught/released a dozen pollock in total. No Bass to be seen :(

HOPES NOSE
By Andy Rider

4pm - 9:30pm Sunday 3rd July

Fished around low tide in the gully on the old sewer side and off the point.
Plenty of mackerel and a few herring.
Fished on the bottom with light tackle (Penn 10' spinning rod, fixed spool with 1.5oz lead and size 2 hook). Using ragworm I picked up a few dogfish and a small red mullet (still trying to get one up to 1lb).
Not too many people around and lovely weather.

PRINCESS PIER
by Nathan Giles

Sunday 3/07/2005
Location : Princess Pier Torquay.
From 3.45pm to 7.00pm
Bait: Squid,lug worms,mack,feathers.

A lot of people about today but very few fish. Whilst I was there I saw 6 mack (2 for me on pink and silver lures)get caught and a few crabs that's it!!
It was very windy and it was coming head on which made float fishing all but impossible.
