August 2006 News Archives

Friday 18th August 2006

I'm sooooo sorry for the longest gap ever between reports. I was away in France (No internet connection at all) and I bust my knee while I was there so computer time has been at zero. Here is the latest batch from around Devon for August.

HOPES NOSE - 14-08-06
By Frank

Me and a friend fished the nose on monday the 14 august got there 7.30 am caught about 18 mack between us spinning but it was fairly slow. i had what i think was a shad about 16 inch s long cross between a herring an a bass. not a horse mack i know what they look like. my mate had a small gar it was surprisingly unpacked down there. i hope the mack fishing picks up before its over.

DART ESTUARY - 13-08-06
By Sheff82

Continuing with my summer estuary experiment i thought i'd have a go at a new venue this week. I've never fished the Dart before and thought it was about time i did.

Conditions made things very tough going particularly early on in the day. Began fishing just after high water, the wind was blowing fairly strongly and the tide run was even stronger, I couldn't hold bottom with a 5oz lead! Lots of debris in the water as well. All this combined to make the fishing very difficult until the ebb flow slowed and the fish came on the feed.

After about 4 1/2 hours i caught the smallest bass ever seen, it was so small it was nearly see-through!!!! This was followed on the next cast by an average sized eel which was having a titanic battle with a crab to get at my bait!!. Only a couple of fish in the end but it makes you feel like you've achieved something when you catch in poor conditions!!

TEIGNMOUTH - 13-08-06
By BassBandit

Fished our fav spot again 5 of us this time. I had the only Bass this time caught at distance just under the current min so he went back then a very pretty Red Gurnard. There were plenty of mackies about and they were mostly well over a pound each and fought better than the Bass i had earlier.

TEIGNMOUTH - 10-08-06
By BassBandit

Fished our fav spot 9 of us fished + one visitor. We all caught fish ranging from Bass, Gar, Red Gurnard and plenty of Mackies, totally different from the previous evening where few fish were caught loads of grock's chicken chucking and float plopping, crossed lines everywhere, hence time to void the point car park.

Anyway the weather was good, the company great, fishing best we've had for a long time. Even went for sausage and chips mid evening.
That's what we call a nice impromptu meet, nothing planned, just mates turn up for a fish and natter etc.

SHARKHAM POINT - 10-08-06
By Mike_D

Fished Sharkham point off the rocks from 6pm to 9 pm (Took me 45 min's to get from Paignton to Brixham). Baits used where Mackeral and Squid. Lost a load of tackle, leads, rigs, shockleader etc...Caught one small pollack about a 1lb in size. Saw a few mackeral being landed on a float set up though.

EAST PORTLEMOUTH - 10-08-06
By Banger

Fished East Portlemouth (Wolf Rock) on the rising tide from 4-9pm.
Baits: Ragworm, Live Peeler, Squid

Was disappointed to see the amount boats and holiday makers crowding the ditch end so had to head up to Wolf Rock. The signs were good early on with Matt (old school friend) pulling in a small plaice (8-10oz) on the first cast! Unluckily this was the only plaice to be had and while Matt continued to catch Pollack (up to 2lb) and wrasse close in on his 2nd rod, the action further out was pretty poor. I think Mat had a total of 3 wrasse (to 2 1/2lb) and 2 Pollack (to 2lb) while I persisted trying for the flatties with no luck and went home with a blank

PRINCESS PIE - 08-08-06
By DevonDave

Well all i can say is don't bother visiting the pier if your planning on eating what you catch for tea or you may end up rather hungry!

I fished the pier from 12noon until 5:30pm caught 3 mackeral and didn't see any of the numerous anglers catch anything! i was using live pout whiting as bait but found the mackeral to be fussy even with these they would take the small golden pout but wouldn't touch the small (same size) striped pout which i found interesting.

i caught the pout with the aid of a baited drop net 30 odd each drop (but only 3 or 4 were the chosen golden ones! Float fished these 12ft deep and that's what i caught the mackeral on

BRIXHAM BREAKWATER - 07-08-06
By Mike D

Fished the breakwater on Monday night. Got there just after 7 to reduce the amount i was ripped off for parking.

High tide was 4:30 pm ish... Anyway set up just inside the marina, about a third of the way down. It was a lovely evening, nice and warm and very calm and not too many about. Float fished mackeral strips at about 5 feet, had loads of bites from very small fish, then all of a sudden just as the light faded had a proper bite followed by landing a horse mackeral. At the same time my father-in-law had a small pollock. Then it went dead again.

Fixed my glow sticks to my float and put it back in the water, bang my float disappeared, what a bite, then as I'm reeling in fighting the fish it starts running in towards me. By this time I'm thinking big bass. Just as its getting close......SNAP goes my line...look slightly to my left and see some teenage kid lure fishing dragging in my trace and my float bobbing around on the water....ARRRGHHHH!!!!

TEIGN ESTUARY - 06-08-06
By Sheff82

After the relative success of my trip last week i thought i'd give it another go but try fishing the tide coming in this time and from another spot on the river. Used exactly the same bait and rigs as last week but this time things were very poor. Had one bite that i missed from my first cast but nothing after that. To make matters worse my line was cut by a passing boat! Did see a few fish, mostly mullet feeding in the shallows and one large fish jump, possible bass, trout or salmon only caught a glimpse of the underbelly. At least there wasn't anyone else around!! There is always next week!

THUNDERHOLE - 06-08-06
By Gareth

Went to thunder hole on sunday night with my Bro (Madangler). got there about 5.30pm, just after high tide. Decided to try a new spinner i had and my bro used a float. Caught nothing at all and not even a bit but did manage to improve my casting!!. about 7.30 my bro went home and 2 other mates came along.

i carried on with the spinner just cause i didn't want to have wasted 2 hrs and my mates set up floats first about 9 feet, then 12 then finally 15-16 feet deep. i caught nothing still and they were into the fish within 20 minutes, 3 biggish mackeral.

after trying to float for an hour i went home at 10 because it became to dark for me. my friends however stayed on with their poncy new night floats (with glowy bits on top) and when they came home at 1am they had a good haul of about 8 pollack big enough to eat plus some mackies.

Micky (Gollah) had set up a bottom rig which he left out all night with no bites but when he reeled in to pack up turned out to have hooked a fine doggy although not sure what type (think was spotted/rough hound).

All in all seems a good place to fish but once more darkness seems to bring out the fish. am planning another trip there hopefully this week.

EAST PORTLEMOUTH - 04-08-06
By Mike_D

Wanted to fish sunny cove but when I got there it was swamped with boats and people. Usually fish it in the winter and have had a few small bass from the beach to peeler.

Anyway fought on through the fern the other side of the beach to get down to a good rock mark which usually produces. Got there about 8 and fished through to 1 am with high tide about midnight. Had some real good rod rattling bites but all the bites only produced a large edible crab and a shore rockling. Last time i fished the same spot I had a dogfish, rockling and huss.

The spot is a bit tackle hungry and demands the use of rotten bottoms pulley rigs and you have to accept the fact that you will lose some tackle. Best baits are peeler, rag tipped with squid for the flatties and sandeel for the rays. Mackeral will always catch you a doggy.

BEESANDS - 04-08-06
By Riceman

Hello everyone ! had a few spare hours so tried Beesands, got there around eight pm. A few hol anglers around.
Got right up there noses when i trotted down the beach to the waters edge with my float and small live sandeel " bang" straight into a nice Mackie. Started a stampede from the grocs who ran up the beach to set there floats up ! they were all bottom or feather fishing, aaah local knowledge !. Got a few small Garfish fishing really shallow, they were tricky to hook though, crafty buggers were biting sandeels clean in half.
Had a few more Mackies then called it a night at 10.30.
Water was gin clear with no weed problems, easy fishing !

PRINCESS PIER - 04-08-06
By Gareth

Got to princess pier at 8.00pm just at full low tide. messed about for a bit putting new line on my reel and then tried a bit of feathering but the pier was totally crowded so was not very easy. decided to float fish like everyone else who was there and set up a small float about 4-5ft deep using mackeral strips. by about 11.00pm the pier was empty of all except me and my 2 buddies. then we started catching!! when we finally left at about 2.30am the tide had come back in and we had caught 6 good size mackeral and 10 scad. also a couple of tiny pollack. was the best fishing i have done this year and totally different from my last 2 outings where i came home after catching nothing

PRINCESS PIER - 02-08-06
By Rich

Tide was midday, water initially was flat calm with a gentle breeze, this changed during the morning, until very gusty at lunch time (we packed up 13:30) Cloudy at first but brightened up, occasional big cloud blotted out the sun.

Use various baits... Frozen Sandeel, Squid, Mackerel, and cocktails of all the previous. I caught 5 average mackerel, 2 small pollack and a half decent Pouting (is there such a thing as a decent pouting :-) )
Blanker caught two similar sized mackerel and a number of the same similarly sized pollack (I make a point here of mentioning these pollock were 20-30yards out from the wall), others around caught the odd mackerel n smelly (garfish).

During the brighter periods seem to produce the best bites, the fish were not readily taking bait, they were a bit picky & slow on the uptake...we both had good bites yet failed to hook a fair few of them. We float fished various depths, but 4-8 foot below the surface produced best results.
