BERRY HEAD
By matthew le Gassick
Fished berry head on the platform saturday 21st from 8.30am to 6.00pm very dissapointing days fishing as i travelled up from plymouth. I fished with two rods one cast 80 to 100 yards out the other 10 to 20 yards both on the bottom. had every bait at my dissposal and tryed many differen combinations on many different rigs. Not one bite until approx 5.30 at the turn of the tide when i landed two monster ballen wrasse biggest ive seen! one after the other they were both caught close in on a pennal rig they both fell to rag worm. My two mates and another guy there never had a single bite all day. Packed up when the last of the light was lost. Have had luck here in the past but not today maybe next time?
MEADFOOT BEACH
By Barry Gilbert
Climbed out on the rocks at the car park end about 3.30pm.
Fished the bottom with mackerel bait - caught a fantastic looking Smooth Hound , 3.5 to 4ft long , had to lift it out of the water by grabing hold of the line as the pier rod I was using bent double . It was black on the top with a spotted belly , and had a very nasty looking set of teeth !! Best fish I have ever caught !! Put it back in the water and watched it sidle off swaying from side to side .
Decided to get back to shore about 5.30 pm. and fished off the slope till 10pm. and caught two small rockling , and had plenty of bites.
A very good days fishing all round ............
BABBACOMBE PIER
By Steve Watts
BABBACOMBE PIER 17th january
TIME:900am-1130am
BAITS USED: squid ,mackerel and sand eel
TIDE: high on arrival but on the return by 1130.
fished with bottom rig casting about 100 yards just to the right at the end of the pier and finally hooked my first dogfish using squid and sandeel for bait, wieghed in at just under one and a half pound (no monster but a good fight) also took second rod with float set up but too choppy to register any bites so broke down the float set-up to try surface popper and dexter wedge chancing the odd mackerel or bass but no luck.

Went down to Princess Pier at night and I was bottom fishing. I had loads of bites, I eventually brought 1 whiting in which weighed 12oz and a load of baby whiting and 2 crabs. I had to call it a day as i ran out of bait.

Here is a rundown of the reports received over the Christmas holidays:
BERRY HEAD
By Michael CHUBB Ballard
sunday 18th dec ~ berry head ~ 1pm - 9pm spun fake ragworm for pollock with no success but a small mackerel was caught on a dexter wedge by my mate...at dusk we set up running ledgers with squid and ragworm baits and i had a whole squid on a 3/0 pennel...bite straight away on that but it shredded the bait in one bite and disappeared. rods kept busy all evening by pout and poor cod, 2 doggies were caught on whole squid and one on mackerel and ragworm.
wednesday 21st dec ~ berry head ~ 6pm - 1am pretty much same set up as sunday...4 rods between the 2 of us, with a one large bait and one small bait in for each of us (my large bait was once again whole squid on 3/0 pennel). once again the small rods kept busy up 1 hr before high tide by small fish, then went quite for an hour, then all hell broke loose with all the rods going all the time, we changed the smaller rods to bigger baits and found that we were swamped by doggies, more often than not, we were both bringing in a doggie at the same time and bites came a couple minutes after the bait had touched the bottom (sometimes had instant bites). some other guy had 2 nice codling easily over 2lb on large mackerel baits fished at range. final tally for the night was a few small fish. lots of decent sized doggies with 3 being over 2lb and many more being close to the 2lb mark. all baits were catching (whole squid, half squid, mackerel chunks, various cocktails with ragworm).
Capstone Point, Ilfracombe
By Matt Elsmore
28/12/2005 I fished the point, nothing for the first 2 hours and at the turn of high tide, every cast out i was getting bites. ended up with a small conger eel, 2lb 5 bearded rockling and a small dogfish. Sea state was very calm, no wind, but very cold. called it a day when i ran out of bait at about 6pm!
PRINESS PIER
By Barry Gilbert
Tuesday 3rd January 06
Fished Princess Pier from 9.30pm to 2.45 am - Lots of small whiting on the bottom and several mackerel close in after midnight - great sport catching the mackerel on just a piece of garfish for bait , with no float or weight attached to the line - just cast out about 10 feet and let the bait sink slowly and you could see the mackerel gathering . Just reeled in really slowly and waited for them to strike !!
