JUST BACK FROM A BUSINESS TRIP SO HERE'S THE REPORTS SINCE I LEFT...

PRINCESS PIER - 20/06/06
By Rich

StarcrossBass & Rich fished Princess Pier from about 7am until 10:30am

Strong wind when we arrived but was building while we were there, the sea was get rougher all the while too... The wind was blowing straight at us, so anything we cast out just came right back in. A few people there, but steadily left, the seal was about too, very few fish around, I caught one not so impressive mackerel (about half pound mark) on my usual happy mix (mackerel strip tipped with squid strip)

We basically quit early cos of the worsening conditions Crying or Very sad. On the positive side, I at least baptised my new rod with a fish. The weather forcast is pretty muh the same for the next week or so...but there are some bigger tides monday & tuesday next week, which may be worth trying

SHALDON - 20/06/06
By Bassbandit

Fished the river mouth on shaldon side, three of us fishing had over a dozen bass and a couple of mackies between us. I had four bass all around the min size and all went back (personally i don't like taking them below 40cm). Guy next to me had one decent size bass of 2lb+ which he kept for tea. We were all using rubber eels.

SHALDON - 19/06/06
By Bassbandit

Fished shaldon side of the river mouth and tried again with surface plugs but no luck nobody else did either once the tide changed which was when i arrived. There had been a few nice bass caught 2/3lb all on white eddystone eels.

DAWLISH WARREN - 18/06/06
By Tom

I fished the beach today from high water down. Decided to have a go for flatties and added some attractor blades to my hook lengths, but to no avail. Only had one small knock all day. The wind was blowing hard and there was some chop on the water. I felt i might pick up a bass with the conditions looking good but if they were about they were probably feeding on sandeels. Spent the day watching the terns diving sometimes with yards of the shore and taking a sandeel every time. Great to watch, shame there weren't any fish.

SHALDON BEACH - 17/06/06
By J. Grimes

Fished Shaldon Beach as the tide was going out but had very little in the way of fish. I did get one small bass at low water but it was under size.

There were about 7 other anglers there and bass were caught. One angler stood out from the rest and must have had about 7 / 8 bass but I will not say anymore as he is a forum member and I don't want to take the credit and report on his fish.....I am sure he will report his days fishing soon. But needless to say he fished about 30 feet away from me and whenever I turned around he seemed to have a bass on....jammy git.... and well done!

The fish are there and you need to put a bait / lure (the correct one) in the right place at the right time.

TEIGNMOUTH SANDBANK - 15/06/06
By Bassbandit

Fished the sand bank early evening with plugs & lures, couple of knocks but no takes. It looks ideal as the incoming tide attacking both sides of the bank even on a calm sea. Later when the other two bass nutters turned up, rumors that good bass being caught at the other end towards the lido, so off we went plenty of eels in the bucket.

Started fishing then a woman and dog thought it would be fun to throw stones in the sea for the dog to retrieve hence no fish except maybe a "dogfish"!!!!! Anyway moved along out of her way caught a few good schoolies and a few mackies. Talking to an old local who was fishing next to us who said that that the mark does produce some good fish not only bass but the occasional conger, could be interesting on light bass gear? He had caught schoolies/mackerel and a couple of pollack.

LANGSTONE POINT TO BLACK RIDGE - 14/06/06
By Bassbandit

Fished with a mate last night weather very thundery. Started at langstone point and worked our way back towards black bridge. A couple of greedy fluff chucker's had a large bucket almost 3/4 full of fish!

By this time we had caught a few mackies then we saw a huge shoal at least 100yds long, with a cloud of gulls following. A little later we saw a small shoal close to the shore (inches) so we fished it, mixed mackerel and a lot of small scads. Nice evenings fishing but no bass.

PRINCESS PIER - 13/06/06
By StarCrossBass

Got to the pier at 5.30am overcast and breezy. The mackerel were everywhere chasing the large shoals of sandeels, fished float and caught almost every cast for the first couple of hours.By 8am there where about 15 anglers all along the pier and everyone seemed to be catching but by 9am the mackerel had moved on and it became very quiet i packed up at 9am all in all a very enjoyable morning

TEIGNMOUTH (POINT) - 13/06/06
By J. Grimes

Fished Teignmouth beach, right by the mouth of the estuary early evening today I fished as the tide was rising and got there about 6 o'clock, planning to fish for a couple of hours. Not the best sport and didn't get any Mackerel which was strange. I did manage to get two small bass both just under minimum size which is not bad. I had some success with bass over low water on the Shaldon side and wanted to give the Teignmouth side a go over high water, as I have had them here in the past.

The two I had were not the biggest but were in perfect condition. Next target is to catch them on the bottom, so I will be back!

TEIGN ESTUARY - 13/06/06
By Gus

Fished a small beach on the teign side of the river... tonight (13/06/06). we got to it via a path opposite Metro Motors in bishopsteignton..

Anyway got there about 5pm and stayed until 11pm. Plenty of green weed in the river on the rising tide, which was a problem, but as full tide approached it faded away, no bites at all until the tide had turned and the light was going..

I had two small 2" bass, we had 4 rods out and we using peeler and rag.. funny thing though.. i put on a home made flat-fish rig with about a dozen multi colored beads on it... no flat fish but the bass found it all right..

All 4 rods fished the same bait, but only the rod with beads on it took any fish. Got a good knock just as the light faded, bounced the rod about all over the place.. however i hit a patch of weed on the way in and whatever it was...got away which is a pity .... as it feel a lot bigger that the bass i had before..

TEIGNMOUTH - 13/06/06
By Bassbandit

Got the waders out for the first time this year and fished of the beach from about 7'ish to 10.00 flood to start of the ebb. Couple of decent pristine schoolies, and some big mackies. Great evening and the waters getting warm.

ANOTHER LARGE PILE OF REPORTS TODAY, GRAB A BEER OR COFFEE AND SETTLE DOWN TO SOME READING!

HOPES NOSE
By Don Vito

Me and my mate went down hopes nose on saturday, the wind wasnt strong but when i had a look at the sea I thought the water was as rough as hell. I started to feather and within 2 casts I caught 2 mackerel they weren't the biggest mackerel in the world but there we go. As I was looking across the sea I saw the seal munching on some fish (sigh seals always get fish) the day didn't get any better until it was 1:30.

The first sign of activity I saw was that someone's float went under and sure enough a couple of minutes later the man was bringing in a Garfish then seconds later my mate caught 4 mackerel on the feathers. so I started floating and feathering instantly I caught 4 mackerel on the feathers and on my float I had loads of bites and brought in a mackerel.

TEIGNMOUTH POINT CAR PARK
By BassBandit

Fished the point car park until about 9.30pm. Not alot happening a few mackerel about later. A few fishing there mainly feather chucker's. This mark is not producing like it usually does i think this is because the depth of water has reduced due to silting up. Things might change if we get a bit of a blow.

TEIGN ESTUARY
By J Grimes

Went to the Teign estuary for a few hours today to fish for bass. Got to the Shaldon side at about 12.15 and fish over low water and as it started to come in. Had the usual Mackerel and 3 nice bass of which one was of a good keep size. There were about 6 people fishing and had a great couple of hours. My son was searching the rock pools near the mouth of the river and came back to me with a bucket of small fish (one was a flat fish) and eels, ideal bait if I was to stay but we had a great few hours.

DAWLISH POUT WALL
By BassBandit

Only fished for about an hour 8.30-9.30 plenty of small joey mackies and what i think was sprats (not sandeels) breaking the surface. Mind was on bass so after catching a nice joey swapped rigs for a nice 5/0 hook fluorocarbon leader and free lined the joey. Couple of knocks but it started to rain so packed in. The gulls were in a feeding frenzy over the rocks scooping up the bait fish. Might try again tonight fishing into the dark.

TEIGNMOUTH
By Sheff82

Seems like a lot of you guys were fishing down this way yesterday. I chose to fish the tide up and back from the point car park from about 4 until 9.30. I tend to fish on the bottom. Used rag and peeler yesterday as i've had reasonable sized flounder from that spot before and i fancied seeing if there were any flatties about this time of year. Found to begin with there was a lot of weed around but did manage a small bass, the only fish of the session but much better than a blank! It was only 8inches long but beautiful - all spines and aggression! The weed seemed to disappear after high water but i only had a couple of small bites later on. The bass was on ragworm before high tide.
A few others were feathering and using floats but they didn't score at all.

DAWLISH (BLACK RIDGE)
By Ratlover

Decided to nip down for a quick splash on Sunday evening between 7:30pm - 8:30pm, Plenty of people fishing the wall below Black Bridge.
Met my mate down there about 7:30pm who had already lost 2 Mackerel on float set up, so as fish were about I decided to put on a set of feathers and have a go.
Ended up with 4 Mackerel for the pot, some smaller ones went back and must of lost at least 6 more in the weed but all told an enjoyable hours fishing.
Plenty of fish being caught all along the wall.............lots of Tight Lines

PRINCESS PIER
By MadAngler

Took my 12 year old daughter out for a fishing lesson on the pier at 7pm (Sunday) a few people about had 4 mackies on float with sandeel and on dexter wedge daughter managed one big mackie they were right in tight against the wall and were chasing the eels at one point they were jumping out the water by the second set of steps hundreds of them then they all went in to the harbour by the building works they were boiling in there for ages so we packed up and called it a night at 9pm

BERRY HEAD
By RigChukka

Due to the tide being low tonight (Saturday) we decided to do Berry Head as even at low tide you are still in quite deep water, we turned up about nine and to our surprise found that we had the large platform to ourselves so on went the feathers as my mate and myself only had a small amount of squid between us,it didn’t take long before we had enough bait for the evening and we didn’t have to cast far for them as the mackerel were only yards away, you could see them hitting the surface as they were feeding on the sand eel.

By 9.45 we decided to rig up for bottom as we were running out of light fast and the last 5 cast hadn’t produced anymore mackerel so on went the 3/0 pulley rigs baited up with fresh mackerel and squid but from there on in all that we caught was seaweed and old rigs that had snagged bottom I can see now why the fella’s around the corner were float fishing ,at one point I thought my luck had changed and I was playing the mother of all fishes as the rod nearly bent 180 degrees only to find that I had hooked up to one of the supermarket carrier bags that seem to get left behind and end up in the water ( if only people would take there rubbish home).decided to call it a night about 2 o clock because it just wasn’t happening but we did walk away with 10 mackerel for the pot.

PRINCESS PIER
By Rich

Fished from 6am - 1pm on Saturday

Bright sunshine, water was a little choppy, with a fair bit of weed hanging about, and a very strong wind that increased throughout (would have stayed longer but for the wind, which was E-SE)

A fair amount of Mackerel to be had, not many over the 1lb mark, also saw some mackerel being chased at one one point (Bass I assume) and a good number of sandies and Brit to be seen too. Some Garfish too, Mackerel also seemed to chase bait on the retrieve, but because of the wind, casting a lure/spinner was difficult (had to aim for haldon pier to get your rig to land in front of you) I got a couple of mackerel on happy mix bait (Mackerel Squid Cocktail)

PRINCESS PIER
By Simon Baker

Went down the pier from 3pm-9pm (Thursday), LOADS AND LOADS OF BRIT AND SANDEEL....tried catching a few...very small, but occasionally the big sandeel came by and i had them in my floating livewell bucket. I tried a couple on circle hooks, the mackerel that took them were stonkin great biguns but hard to set the hook as you gotta give 'em time to chew 32 times and swallow .

Anyway after much faffing about running up and down the pier with my bucket i thought...matey..do urself a favour and chill!!! after weeks of going after bass almost exclusively...with some success it was absolute chilled out bliss just bashin mackies for a couple hours...had more than 20...kept 10 rest back for another day..oh yeah...all on light float gear. Water was nice and clear, flat calm by 6pm when the light wind went easterly. Lots of shoaling mullet, squid and a nice sea trout spotted whilst there...no seals

ANOTHER LARGE PILE OF REPORTS TODAY, GRAB A BEER OR COFFEE AND SETTLE DOWN TO SOME READING!

PRINCESS PIER
By Rich

Went to princess pier this morning (got there 6am) is was overcast, and bloomin cold with a gentle breeze (and stupid here took his fleece off at home cos here in sunny Shiphay, it was warm)

I stayed untik 9:30 am, and fish off just past the first set of steps (Broken seat) and caught a grand total of naught. One person next to me caught one small mackerel (small as in a sandell would have eaten it Laughing )

While some else at the haldon pier end caught four. Strangely, there were no sandeel or anything else to be seen in the water, not even any diving birds (Cormorants etc) Whether this was becuase i fished low water (was planning to fish the flood but got too cold Embarassed ) Hight tide 2:30pm I think or if the nearby building works are to blame (they were making a huge amount of noise this morning) I dont know, not a good start to they year (could go yesterday, someone kindly chucked my bait in the bin)

I used Squid strips as bait, mackerel, sandeel, cocktails ans spinners etc were also all being tried if this helps.

HOPES NOSE
By J Grimes

Fished Hopes Nose today (5.6.06) from about 9.30 til 3.00. I was targetting the flatties but none appeared but still had a good day. Sunny all day and flat calm. There were a few people right on the point taking a lot of Mackerel on feathers etc.

I fished on the high ground and just to the right hand side. As mentioned the flatties did not show but I lost count with how many dogfish I took. Must have had at least 10, which I thought was a little odd as I was using mainly lug, plus it was bright sun shine all day. (I usually get a few but not so many in the bright sun) The dog fish came at all stages of the tide and were a bit of a pain but still put a bend in the rod.

I also did some spinning and the Mackerel were great on the light gear. I took about 15 on spinning throughout the day and moved to float about 2 oclock to see if I could pick up some bigger fish. I had 8 on float and at one point it was a fish a cast. A lot of the Mackerel were small and that was the same for many of the anglers but a great day in the sun.... but I will be back for the flatties!

1 WEEK IN TORBAY - ROUNDUP OF A FEW PLACES
By Vlad

I fished for seven days straight, at Torbay, between the 27 of May and the 3 of June. I have not blanked even once!

I fished the Princes Pier, Brixham breakwater, Goodrington promenade, Hopes nose, Tegnmouth car park point, Tegnmouth Bridge, Shaldon side of the estuary mouth.

I caught mackerel everywhere but at Teignmouth.

I had two Pollock at Hope's nose - one small on a float and one of 2lb on 16g Dexter wedge.

The only place at Teignmouth I saw any fish caught was the estuary mouth, Shaldon side at low tide. It was BASS, lots of it! All of them small scoolies between 1 and 2 lb. At low tide there were 8-10 local anglers fishing for the bass with white rubber eels with 3/4oz ball leads. They were catching a dozen fish each for the two hours around the low tide. I fished there three times and had 21 small bass, less than 2lb, on the white rubber eel. All released straight away, of course. Great fun!
I have not managed to catch bass on live sand eels or artificials anywhere else at Tegnmouth. I saw the car park point fished every day, at high tide, by up to 10 anglers, without a single fish caught from there.

On the fist day - 27 of May (Saturday), I saw a sea trout caught at the Princes pier in the evening with a 16g Dexter wedge.

Simon already posted about the bonito we saw there on the 2 of June.

My last fishing session was at the Hope's nose on the morning of the 3 of June. There I saw a chap from Poole catching a 3lb SEA BREAM!!!!! On a bottom rig with rag worm and squid cocktail! At around 9am!

The conclusion is:
if you are after mackerel, go to Hope's nose. It can be caught there throughout the day, every day, in all weather.
If you want any other fish, go to Teignmouth and fish the estuary mouth on the Shaldon side, 1 hour either side of low tide on white rubber eel - You WILL catch bass!

TEIGNMOUTH AND DAWLISH
By Bassbandit

Friday 2nd june teignmouth back beach 7.30-10.00pm plugging but not even a nibble, but good practice.

Sat 3rd june: dawlish black bridge 8.00-11.000pm. Met an old fishing mate who had moved away but down for the week with his grandson few mackerel about at dusk but nothing much else, some largest fish breaking the water 2/300yds out probobly bass/sea trout. After an evening of catching up one of the points discussed why on the whole is dawlish not that good for fishing except at certain times, conclusion was that nobody fishes it except for bass/mackerel????

Sunday 4th june dawlish mainbreakwall 8.00-10.00pm.
Bucket loads of mackerel about but nothing else except for:

HOPES NOSE
By Nemo

Decided to take a trip down to Hopes Nose today with my son.We started off on the right hand side and he fished float with ragworm while i tried my hand at some spinning.Didnt have any luck with the spinning so i changed to float with rag and hooked a few small ballen wrasse, which were put back. Shortly after my son hooked a large wrasse that gave him quite a fight,he landed it and it weighed in at 2lbs,not bad for his first ever fish!!

After a while we moved over towards the centre of Hopes and i tried my hand with some feathers, after about an hour i had caught about 15 nice sized Mackerel and thrown all the small ones back.We spotted a seal that was very close and watched it feeding, was a nice surprise to see such a lovely animal so close.
All in all was a great day.

DAWLISH WARREN
By Tom

After a successful session here last week i thought i'd give it another go this time in daylight to see if there are any flatties around. What a beautiful day it was yesterday, the sea was like a pond. I fished from 11am down the tide to about 5pm. I didn't get a bite all day until the end when once again i managed to foul hook a small sandeel but at least i got to see a fish. I think it was simply far too bright and calm yesterday to take anything else. Still, i topped up the tan and had a good relax.

GOODRINGTON BEACH
By Nick Thomas
