Daiwa Emcast 5000 Fixed Spool Review
Deciding on fishing equipment is important and often tricky because there are so many options to choose from. This review, by Simon Day, is the Daiwa Emcast 5000 Fixed Spool reel.

A big boy for the big and small fish!

I bought this reel about 6 months ago because I wanted a reel that could handle bigger fish. Because I also fish from piers and cliffs quite a lot I wanted a reel that could reel in a fish out of the water and over cliffs. With a lot of the smaller and lighter reels you struggle getting the fish the 10 to 30 foot up a cliff or pier.
First off as you can see the handle is large and thick. I much prefer this to the normal thin plastic you find on most reels. The surface is non-slip so even on cold, wet nights your grip remains very firm.
The reel comes with a spare spool but be careful of swapping them about on location because there are a lot of small parts that can come off and getting them back on in the dark when your cold and wet can be a real pain.
The casting distance is very good and will easily cast in excess of 100yards and it can also hold a lot of line. I would recommend not going higher than a 15lb line. I have gone as high as 20lb but the casting distance did drop quite noticeably so I dropped back down to 15lb and use a heavier trace instead.
As with a lot of fixed spool reels this one does also suffer from the handle catching the spool arm every now and then.
The Daiwa Emcast 5000 is a big boy and as soon as you secure it to your rod you feel confident you'll be able to handle pretty much anything that gets hooked.
With a price tag of between £50 and £65 it's a nice reel that gives you the feeling of power.
